Additional Context: Implemented by Creative Associates International since 2022, the Leveraging Education Assistance Resources in Nigeria, or LEARN, program scaled up previously successful early literacy projects in select Nigerian states aiming to reach 3.5 million first and second-grade students. The program worked to improve staff and treacher training, standardize and update assessment processes, and improve access to context-appropriate learning materials. The program was planned to run until 2027 with a budget of $48.8 million. When the project was terminated, $24.5 million had been paid.
Devex Researcher Note: According to UNICEF Nigeria, 70% of children could not read at an appropriate level or solve simple math problems as of 2022. Only 6% of the national education budget is directed to non-salary expenditures.
