A news organization in El Salvador has had to reduce their staff to two individuals and terminated the contracts of a dozen collaborators, as a result of U.S. foreign aid cuts.
Date:11/25
Region: Latin America & Caribbean
Country: El Salvador
Topic: Governance & Rights
Policy Lens: Democracy & Governance
Additional Context: The reduction in staff and collaborators has significantly impacted its capacity to train new generations of journalists to provide in-depth coverage of authoritarianism, corruption, and human rights violations in El Salvador. Further, cuts to funding have also left the organization's digital infrastructure in a vulnerable position; the organization's website was attacked and security mechanisms and digital communication safeguards were suspended.
This information was included in a November 2025 report, "When Aid Fades: Impacts and Pathways for the Global Democracy Ecosystem." Information for this report was gathered from quantitative data on U.S. foreign assistance cuts; quantitative and qualitative data from two surveys that focus on democracy, rights, and governance; key informant interviews; and a desk review. The full report can be found here.
