A small independent news agency in Myanmar long relied on project-based support to sustain its operations, including partnering with Internews on a USAID program. As a result of U.S. aid cuts to this program, this organization was forced to halt its work, leaving staff without income.

Date:11/25

Region: East Asia & Pacific

Country: Myanmar

Topic: Gender Equality & Inclusion, Governance & Rights

Policy Lens: Security & Resilience, Democracy & Governance

Additional Context: This independent news agency produced vital news video stories and amplified community voices. The cuts to USAID have further compounded earlier hardships experienced by this independent news agency; since 2022, several journalists from this organization have been arrested by the military. Now, with no funds to pay salaries, the organization is at risk of losing its dedicated citizen journalists and reporters. Despite losing its funding, journalists have continued to report to keep the organization alive.
