All U.S. support for the United Nations Mine Action Service, or UNMAS, was cut for Mali, forcing operations to end.

Country: Mali
Topic: Peacebuilding & Stabilization
Policy Lens: Security & Resilience
Entry Type: Operational Impact
Additional Context: The International Campaign to Ban Landmines mentions that, like many mine-ridden sub-Saharan African countries, Mali had historically struggled to attract donor funding. In this context, U.S. funding had considerable weight, with its assistance accounting for over 50% of the mine action response in the country.
Devex Researcher Note: Following military coups in the country and the subsequent withdrawal of United Nations peacekeeping operations in 2023, UNMAS had ceased its operation in Mali. After a request in 2024, the operation was brought back but forced to shut down again in April 2025 due to lack of funding. As of late 2025, mine action in Mali was practically non-existent, with demining exclusively conducted by the Malian Armed Forces, no functional online monitoring system, and education and victim assistance activities taken on by few international NGOs.
