Eight mine action projects were suspended or significantly scaled down in Afghanistan as a result of U.S. funding cuts.

Region: Europe & Central Asia

Country: Afghanistan

Topic: Peacebuilding & Stabilization

Policy Lens: Security & Resilience

Entry Type: Operational Impact

Additional Context: This data was self-reported by implementing organizations to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, or ICBL, in a survey from late 2025.

The eight affected projects were implemented by six mine survey and clearance operators coordinating the response in Afghanistan, across which 67 demining teams ceased operations. The capacity to conduct risk education outreach activities and provide victim assistance services has also been greatly reduced.

This decision placed additional pressure on an already debilitated financial situation of the mine response in the country. According to ICBL, funding had decreased by 58% in the period since the Taliban's return to power in 2021.
