Even with the reinstatement of some U.S. supported programs, 30% of the World Health Organization, or WHO, country offices reported severe disruptions to malaria-related services as of April 2025.
Date: 4/25
Region: Global
Country: Global
Topic: Health
Policy Lens: Global Health Security
Entry Type: Operational Impact
Additional Context: According to the WHO, a severe disruption represents a change in service volume of above 50%. The WHO has 6 regional offices and around 150 country offices.
Devex Researcher Note: Between 2010 and 2023, the U.S. contributed an average of 37% of global malaria financing. The U.S. officially initiated its withdrawal process from the WHO in January 2025, pausing the flow of all funds to the organization and reassigning American contractors. Although the WHO was able to find alternative funding and reinstate some key programs that had been supported by the U.S., it nevertheless considers that “the disruptions have left critical gaps” in the rapid delivery of prevention and treatment services to at-risk populations.
