Additional Context: This information was self-reported by implementing organizations to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, or ICBL, in a survey from late 2025. These projects addressed land release activities for communities residing along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, disposal of Soviet-era large weapons and ammunition bunkers, clearance of improvised explosive devices and abandoned improvised mines in Helmand province, and third-party monitoring activities.

Devex Researcher Note: In December 2025, the United Nations characterized the funding situation for demining in Afghanistan as dire, with programs facing “imminent suspension without new donor commitments.” Afghanistan has the third largest casualty rate from explosive remnants of war, which kill about 54 people monthly, 77% of which are children.
