In Nigeria, millions of children aged 3–59 months now face repeated malaria exposures and higher risk of severe illness and death. In Kebbi State, the termination of a USG-funded program will likely leave 1.4 million child fevers untested and over 750,000 malaria episodes untreated in 2025.

Additional Context: The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative for States (PMI-S) was USAID Nigeria’s and PMI's flagship project to reduce malaria deaths and illness, especially among children under five and pregnant women. Implemented in eight states, it worked with the Government of Nigeria to improve malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; strengthen policies and coordination under the National Malaria Elimination Program; and enhance data quality and use. The project was terminated. With program closure, seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) campaigns in high transmission states such as Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto risk being scaled down or discontinued.
