In part due to the loss of U.S. funding, Zimbabwe has requested an extension of five years for their global commitment on removing anti-personnel mines from national territory.

Date: 4/25

Region: Africa

Country: Zimbabwe

Topic: Peacebuilding & Stabilization

Policy Lens: Security & Resilience

Entry Type: Secondary Effect

Additional Context: Though this is the sixth extension request under its commitments signed within the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, experts note the reduction of U.S. funding in early 2025 is considered to have "significantly impacted" Zimbabwe's ability to deliver on its promises.

Devex Researcher Note: The loss of U.S. funding had considerable effects on two major de-mining organizations in the country. APOPO, which had a 90% dependence on U.S. grants, was forced to shut its operations in the country. HALO, which received both U.S. government and other donor funding, reduced its capacity by 50%.
