Additional Context: In August 2025, South Africa's Minister of Health Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi announced R753 million ($44 million) to help plug the gap left by U.S. funding cuts to South Africa’s health system. He also announced R268 million ($16 million) in the following two years for researchers that lost their U.S. grants.

Devex Researcher Note: According to the South African Government News Agency, R590 million ($32 million) was allocated for service delivery in provinces through the comprehensive HIV/AIDS component of the District Health Programme Grant, R32.1 million ($1.7 million) went to the National Department of Health to support pharmaceutical supply chain management, and R132 million ($7.1 million) was transferred to the South African Medical Research Council to enhance health research. According to the numbers in this press release, these funds only cover about 9.5% of what was lost annually due to U.S. aid cuts.
