Malaria deaths among mothers and young children could rise again following the end of a multi-state initiative that provided preventive medication across eight Nigerian states. The program, which reached millions each year, supported government efforts to eliminate malaria. Its closure now threatens to undo a decade of progress in reducing preventable malaria deaths.

Additional Context: The U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative for States (PMI-S) was USAID Nigeria’s and PMI's flagship project to reduce malaria deaths and illness, especially among children under five and pregnant women. Implemented in eight states, it worked with the Government of Nigeria to improve malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; strengthen policies and coordination under the National Malaria Elimination Program; and enhance data quality and use. The project was terminated.
