New conservation financing models explored for future implementation in Kenya's Amboseli ecosystem were canceled due to U.S. aid cuts.

Region: Africa
Country: Kenya
Topic: Climate & Environment
Policy Lens: Climate & Resource Pressure
Entry Type: Operational Impact
Additional Context: These interventions were part of $7.8 million USAID grant to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, or IFAW, set to continue through 2027 but terminated in the middle of implementation. The project aimed to transform Kenya's Amboseli and Tsavo ecosystems through strengthened biodiversity protection services and natural resource governance.
Devex Researcher Note: These new conservation financing models included the usage of biodiversity credits and species bonds. Conservation efforts in Amboseli are currently financed by the Kenyan Wildlife Service, which obtains most of its revenue through tourism activities in its parks. Biodiversity efforts in the remaining areas of Amboseli are financed by non-governmental agencies such as IFAW, along with community conservancy and ecotourism revenue sharing agreements.
