Additional Context: Demining survey and clearance operations funded under U.S. grants were implemented by APOPO, whose operations were fully halted, and HALO, whose capacity was reduced by half after losing one third of its funding. Women composed about 30% of staff in both organizations.

Devex Researcher Note: Demining was a particularly relevant source of status and financial security for the female workforce in Zimbabwe. On-the-ground reporting asserts that salaries paid through this work were on average superior to those of other work available for women, such as "government nurses, teachers and soldiers," allowing many to become family breadwinners.
