Additional Context: According to UNFPA, 2025 brought dramatic cuts to the agency's humanitarian funding, causing more than 1,000 UNFPA-supported health facilities and mobile health teams to shut down or be pushed to the verge of closure. Over 250 safe spaces for women and girls have also been forced to close. These clinics and safe spaces are often the frontline of maternal care. When these systems break down, the entire continuum of care does the same: referral pathways rupture, medicines disappear, and women are forced to navigate pregnancy and childbirth without the support they need.

Devex Researcher Note: In pulling out of the UNFPA, the U.S. terminated $377 million in grants in 2025. According to KFF, in 2024, the U.S. was the largest donor to UNFPA, having provided 17% of all contributions. As of May 8, 2025, all U.S. funds have been withheld due to the implementation of the Kemp-Kasten Amendment.
