The Famine Early Warning Systems Network, or FEWS NET, went offline during the foreign assistance review in early 2025. It resumed operations as of June 2025.
Date: 6/25
Region: Global
Country: Global
Topic: Food & Farming
Policy Lens: Security & Resilience
Entry Type: Operational Impact
Additional Context: According to the press release, FEWS NET would reinstate its regular reporting cycle and restore full geographic coverage over the summer of 2025. Since its formation in 1985, FEWS NET has standardized the collection, analysis, and publication of data on a wide range of integrated factors that contribute to food insecurity — including local livelihoods, conflict, markets and trade systems, agroclimatology and weather, and more — enabling cross-country comparisons of emerging crises. Coming back online, the initiative continues to inform U.S. government decisions on how much food to purchase from American farmers and where it should be sent.
Devex Researcher Note: Though FEWS NET is once again operational, the data that it has relied on from partners, including the World Food Programme, has changed due to funding cuts, as documented by The Aid Report.
