Additional Context: The Minnesota-based organization Alight saw its programs approved as lifesaving during the initial foreign aid review in early 2025. The U.S. government officials told Alight that when the program’s original award ended, it would be renewed until October of 2026. Despite that, Alight learned just eight days before the program’s grant period ended that the funding would not, in fact, be renewed, triggering a scramble for stopgap support. More than 230 Somalia-based staff will now lose their jobs, including 60 employed by Alight and 173 seconded by the Somali government.

This quote is attributed to Adan Adar, Alight’s executive director for the Horn of Africa.
