The suspension of economic and psychosocial support activities in Goma left 1,250 women and girls—over 300 of whom are already sexual violence survivors—without access to the care and resources they need to recover.

Date: 9/25

Region: Africa

Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo

Topic: Peacebuilding & Stabilization

Policy Lens: Security & Resilience

Additional Context: The Partnership for the Development of the Eastern Congo (P-DEC) program aimed to strengthen the foundations for durable peace in North Kivu and Ituri by promoting conflict resolution, economic development, and environmental conservation.

As part of this program, survivors receive counseling, education and dignity kits to support protection against further sexual violence, education on how to run a small business, and seed money to kickstart their chosen trade. Without the education and skills for other income-generating activities, many of the women will be forced to return to the fields to cultivate food, exposing them to greater risk of sexual violence.

The program was terminated.
