The World Food Programme, or WFP, was forced to shut down its Southern Africa office due to aid cuts in March 2025. As of January 2026, the WFP office remains closed.

Date: 1/26

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Topic: Food & Farming

Policy Lens: Global Health Security

Entry Type: Operational Impact

Additional Context: In a region currently experiencing severe drought, widespread crop and livestock losses, and escalating conflict, the office’s closure will limit the delivery of humanitarian aid—exacerbating food shortages and already-high rates of chronic malnutrition. The World Food Programme, or WFP, received half of its budget in 2024 from U.S foreign assistance that has largely been cut.

According to WFP, due to budget constraints they have consolidated southern and east Africa operations into one regional office in Nairobi, Kenya. Some food programs have continued.
